A lack of awareness of subsidence potential, combined with urban expansion, resulted in many homes and neighborhoods being built over these old mines. Subsidence over abandoned coal mines is a potential hazard for an estimated 25,000 people and 7,500 houses along the Front Range Urban Corridor (2004 figures).
